As discussed in last week's training review, I am feeling that it is so important to have some runs that are more about the pleasure of running than hitting a pace or distance. For me, following a strict training plan can result in running feeling like work, which it is, but it's not fun work when I'm focused on maintaining a pace and getting in some speed. I need breaks from this in which running is an adventure and just feels good.
This week I had a pleasure trail run with Mallory in Chepachet, Rhode Island. This was not on my schedule in terms of distance or pace. In fact, there will never be a trail run as part of my training before the marathon (now in twelve more weeks), but I did it anyway and don't feel guilty about it. Trail runs strengthen the feet and ankles. Variety is good. Mallory and I ran together, which we don't get to do often anymore due to us both following different plans with different demands. Running has been a very solitary activity the past several weeks and it was nice to have company and explore a new place. I really wanted to add a swim in the pond after this run, but it was too cold.
Here are some photos from the experience...

Last of all, I also retired one pair of Newton running shoes and replaced them with two new pair that I got on major sale! Newtons are my brand! I really believe these shoes are helping me avoid injury and improve my pace. Most recent major PRs happened in these. Granted there's also been a lot of work on my part other than wearing these killer shoes, but still.
